Chicago Booth Finance vs Yale Econ

$

Dear all,

I have offers from both Chicago Booth Finance PhD Program (not joint program in financial economics) and Yale Economics PhD Program, and I am making a tough choice between these two.
My interest is in finance and macroeconomics, and I would like to be on the finance faculty job market upon graduation.

Here are some of my preliminary and incomplete thoughts about the trade-off between these two:

1. Chicago has better finance department than Yale.
2. Chicago has more many big names and active researchers in both macro and finance.

But,
3. I heard some gossiping that Chicago Econ faculty does not offer enough support, not sure whether it is true and don't know about finance department.
4. It seems that the overall university prestige of Yale is better than U Chicago.

Therefore, I sincerely ask for your suggestions.
Thanks very much!

Acceptance before and withdraw after 15th

"However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an insti- tution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer. It is further agreed by the institutions and organizations subscribing to the above Resolution that a copy of this Resolution or a link to the URL should accompany every scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, and assistantship offer." From council of grad studies.

hello everybody, are there past data about the cases in which a student accepted an offer, then withdrew after April 15? If anyone has personal experience about this kind of situation please share it with everybody.

I am also wondering about how would be treated a student that asked for release by the university but was refused and then just enrolled to the initially accepted program, don't u think it would be kind of unpleasant situation?

Penn State vs Minnesota

Hi.

I'd like to compare these two choices. While Minnesota has a much higher rank and a better placement record than Penn State, its forte is macro whereas I have a strict preference for microeconomic theory which is what the PSU department is strong in. Moreover, Penn State is a rising department so who knows what the placements will be like by the time I graduate.

Another potential problem with PSU is the high attrition rate, they have a reputation for kicking out a non-trivial fraction of the entering class by the end of first year.

I am indifferent location-wise ad funding is similar.

Any insights would be very helpful!

Comparing Unranked Business Phd Programs - Any help?

$

Hi all. I'm applying for Management Phd programs for the fall and I'm waiting to hear back from some of the higher ranked programs I interviewed with. Up till now I've only been accepted to my two safety schools - Kent State University and Wayne State University.

Neither are ranked specifically for business on any of the major rankings outlets I'm aware of (ARWU, US News, etc.). Both are on the Princeton Review "Top 296" but no further info than that. However from an "overall university" standpoint, Wayne seems to outperform Kent (obviously this takes into consideration all the non-business programs so it's not necessarily all that helpful).

If I end up only getting these two admits, how do I decide? Kent had more strict application requirements (higher GMAT expectations, etc.) but I don't know if that's a good enough thing to go on, especially when it seems the overall reputation of Wayne as a school is greater. Any tips would be huge. Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone,

I got the admission to the PhD in economics and finance (economics curriculum ) of Bocconi.
Does anyone know will it be possible for me to change curriculum from economics to finance during enrolment or the second year?

Thanks!

2015 students ask current students thread

I saw a thread with the same title in the 'PhD in Business' forum and thought economics too could use one. {I did a cursory search and din't find a similar thread, but do let me know if such a thread already exists}.

I will be starting my PhD in Fall'15 and would be glad to have current students answer some of the questions. I'm sure other new admits share this sentiment.

Profile Evaluation for Fall 2016 - Rejected for Fall/15

Hi

I am looking forward to some feedback on my profile and suggestions for a plan of action for Marketing PhD (CB) for Fall 2016.

Undergrad: Engineering with majors in Biotech - 75.1% Hons. and I think that's eq to 3.6
GMAT - 630 (1st), 680 (2nd - q49, v34) - didn't study enough, was always busy with work
Work Exp: 4 years in marketing, retailing and business development
Research Exp: 1 yr paid and + 1 yr unpaid RA at IIM-A (undisputedly the best B school in India) with a senior prof + did research for a NGO (non-marketing, social impact assessment).

So basically I applied only at UoA (Canada) as my wife is doing her phd (diff field) from there. But I really liked some of faculty members' work in CB. Thus I went to Canada in Oct/14 and met one of the published prof. I shared with him my interest in engaging in meaningful research work. I assisted him a little in some research work for 2-3 months and in the process portrayed myself as a strong candidate. Took his encouragement to apply and then 2 weeks later got interviewed by him. He only asked 2-3 basic questions. He liked me and told me that I was his #1 choice. However, I was told, the final decision is more of a committee decision. I just got to know that i didn't make it to the final list. One mistake I made was that I didn't ask him to review my app so that he could suggest changes, if any (he himself said this).

Now, the thing is that I am 29 and have lost another year. But I want to make it count and hit back harder. My plan is:

- give GMAT again (i think I can hit 700, will try more but 700 seems certain)
- work with this canadian prof for a year (part time) and get his reco and guidance in the end + although I want to see if I can publish anything with him but I guess time is less
- Now I will have letter of recommendation from (i) Canadian Prof (citations 5k+ in google scholar, (ii) Senior IIM Prof, (iii) a young IIM Prof who did his PhD from FSU
- Get at least 1-2 of my registered working papers published by Nov. This publication might just be a conference publication or a B grade journal - also most of my research work is in the b2b marketing or retailing context and my interest is in CB
- Apply to US universities as well, as my wife finishes her PhD in the next 1.5 years.
- I will meet the Canadian Prof to discuss what could be my future action plan.

Would love to know what are my chances of cracking into univ b/w T20 and T50, especially UBC and UT. I mention these as my Canadian exp might be more appreciated there and the Prof might directly know faculty at these univs in case if he agrees to endorse me a little more. Also, what else could I do to further strengthen my profile?

Thanks in advance:)

Duke vs Minnesota

Both Duke and Minnesota admitted me to their PhD program in Economics and I would like to get your responses about some points to facilitate my decision.

Minnesota is much more traditional; they have a strong Macro group. Also, they offered me TAship $14k and fellowship $5k.
By the other side, Duke has improved a lot in the last years and hired some great professors. Also, they offered me fellowship for the first year $25k and summer research $5k.

  1. I have heard many good comments about the work environment in Minnesota, but nothing about environment in Duke. Do you guys know how things work in Duke, how students and professors interact, how much students cooperate with each other?
  2. In a general way, how do you compare these two programs? Which school would you choose?
  3. Is there any difference in taxation between fellowships and TAships? And what about the states of Minnesota and North Carolina? Specifically, do you know how much I would receive (after tax) in each school?

I appreciate any help.

I've been accepted to MSc Economics in Europe. Now, where to go?

Hi everyone! I often read this forum and this time I'm in need of help!

Considering that I would like to work in consultancy after graduation or alternatively applying for a Phd, what program is my best fit between Msc Economics at Nottingham, York, Exeter, Bath.. MSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at U. of Amsterdam and QEM Erasmus Mundus?

So far the only 2 year program I've been accepted to is QEM Erasmus Mundus.

Academically speaking I'm oriented on theoretical economics specifically decision theory but I'm open to other contaminations.

Financially speaking, in terms of tuition fees, I reckon that Amsterdam one year program with 2000€ of fee would be, together with QEM (that is offering me some financial aid, though not full scholarships) the most affordable option. Still I can't say if my decision is based on the financial factor. Money is at the moment an issue but in the next few months I could afford without harm even more costly programs.

Said that, I'm waiting for LSE and Warwick Msc Economics as well as Oxford Mphil results. But I'm not confident I'll make it into these schools.

Where should I go for? Is it better for me one year in the Uk or is it better Amsterdam or maybe try the QEM program?

Thank you folks for the help! I Desperately need some suggestions!

Which Math Course Would You Recommend? ODE / PDE / Fourier / Dynamic Systems

Hi, everyone!

I am a double major in Econ & Math at a US university who will apply for an econ Phd program next year. Now, I am considering which math course to take in fall. So, I hope to hear from your advice.

For the math course, I am sure that I will definitely take the Intro Analysis course (Baby Rudin level) and Intro Stochastic Process (Durrett). But I still want to take a third one.

Here are the options:

1) Applied Ordinary Differential Equations
Textbook: Differential Equations by Paul Blanchard
I once learned some basic ODE from a 2000-level differential equations and linear algebra course. Will this course helpful?
In addition, there is a slightly more advanced ODE course at my U, but the course content varies depending on who teaches this course and only opens in spring.

2) Elementary Partial Differential Equations I
Textbook: Introduction to Partial Differential Equations by Olver (Chapter 1 - 5)
This is the first part of a one-year sequence course. I think I probably don't have enough time to take the II in the spring.
It seems that there are quite a bit Physis/ Engineering topics in this course.

3) Applied Fourier Analysis
Textbook: Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems by Brown
I heard that Fourier analysis can be helpful in econometrics. Will you recommend?

4) Dynamic Systems and Chaos
Textbook: Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, and an Introduction to Chaos by Hirsch
Is this course worth taking for me? It seems that this is relevant to differential equations but I have no idea about the course content.

5) Honors Abstract Algebra I
Textbook: Either Dummit or Artin
It seems that this subject has little help on economics. The only reason that I list it here is that I have to take one Abstract Algebra course to fulfill major requirement.

I appreciate any help!

Thank you!

I'm on the waitlist for Minnesota. I've been checking GradCafe pretty regularly, and it looks like they sent out another round of waitlist decisions. Does anyone know if there's any difference between the two groups?

Hello all!

I was shortlisted by Warwick for an interview.

They said it will be around 10 or 15 minutes. So I do not expect them to go into too much detail.

Nevertheless, if any of you experienced this interview in the past or if anyone has some information about what to expect, share it here!

Math Camp

I know most econ PhD programs will normally do a math camp before the first year to get everyone up to speed. I'm sure it's different at every school, but I'm just a bit curious as to what they go over. Does anyone know the general topics that they normally go over?

Gifts for Recommenders

Just curious - is anyone planning on getting gifts for their recommenders? I'm not talking about anything extravagant here, but what would be something that's appropriate for the time and effort they spent on the letter? I don't live in the same part of the country as them.

I already wrote them a hand written thank you card right after they hit 'submit' for the recommendations in December. This is more a "hey, your letter worked, here's what I've decided" type of thing. I was thinking of a mug from my school of choice and some really nice (and somewhat pricey) local chocolates from either the school's city or my current city, and perhaps coffee.

Stanford Econ vs Stern Fin vs Wharton Fin

I've got offers from Stanford Econ, Stern and Wharton. Money is the same in all three (in real terms).

Most people would tell me to go to Stanford, but taking into account my preference for Macro-Finance, I am having a lot of doubt. There is this endless rumor that Piazzesi and Schneider are leaving Stanford. Besides, Finance job market seems to be a lot easier than Econ job market.

Any thoughts?
