PhD in Finance instead of PhD in Economics

$

I was waitlisted at a school a week or so ago and then that school emailed me a few days ago asking if I would be interested in admission to their finance department (in the b-school) instead of their economics department. My intended research interests in economics were going to be mainly micro theory - game theory / mechanism design, information economics, market design and I hadn't even thought of ever going to get a PhD in Finance. Would I be able to pursue my intended research interests in the finance department? Post-graduation would it be tough for me to get placement into an economics department?

THE TASKThe following appeared as a letter to the editor from a Central Plaza store owner."Over the past two years, the number of shoppers in Central Plaza has been steadily decreasing while the popularity of skateboarding has increased dramatically. Many Central Plaza store owners believe that the decrease in their business is due to the number of skateboard users in the plaza. There has also been a dramatic increase in the amount of litter and vandalism throughout the plaza. Thus, we recommend that the city prohibit skateboarding in Central Plaza. If skateboarding is prohibited here, we predict that business in Central Plaza will return to its previously high levels."Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.THE WRITINGThe Central Plaza store owner makes a generalized conclusion that the increase in the skateboarder’s population as well as vandalism and littering have negatively affected the number of shoppers at the plaza. The owner also states that forbidding skateboarding on the premises of the plaza will return business to its normal sales level. However, some questions below need to be answered first before any mandate goes into place. Is there any evidence that prove there is a relationship between number of shoppers and number of skateboard users in the plaza? We cannot justify the skate board users diminish the sales of Central Plaza solely because the number of shoppers has been steadily decreasing while the popularity of skateboarding has increased dramatically. Studies have shown that data and variables could result deceitful correlation which the authenticity should be detect through some statistics test, such as the F test. Verify the correlation is necessary if the city does not want their action become an ineffective effort just because the popularity of skateboarding is correctly has nothing to do with the deteriorating of sales.Do the skateboard users significantly affect the number of customer, or is there another factor that actually affect the customers decisions? Although the number of skateboard users is proven to have relationship with number of customers, the owner still need to ascertain whether the skateboard users alter the sales significantly and identify if another factor, like inflation or new competitor as well induce the decrease. Assuming that a nearby-new plaza with better prices and attracted spots prevail more the downturn, banned the skateboard shall not return the profit to its previously high levels. Business perhaps will getting better if the plaza give more discounts to its products and conduct some attraction in the plaza. Is there any evidence that confirm litter and vandalism makes shoppers feel uncomfortable and affect their preferences to go to the plaza? People indeed generally feel disgust with litter, but if the plaza is located in slum area and visited by people from the area, prices are likely more affect their decisions rather than cleanliness or mischievousness at the plaza. If this is true, halt the skateboard activity at the plaza will not incline of the customers as much it used to be. In case that the litter and vandalism indeed affect people preferences to go to plaza, is there any proof that the litter and vandalism is generated by skateboard users in the plaza? Except the skateboard users, there are many other possible factors that could encourage the litter and vandalism, such as the laziness of cleaner and security people, the economy crisis, or the cutting budget for sanitation and security services. If the laziness of cleaner and security people are the cause, banned the skateboard users will not bring any result while disciplining the officers will bring more desired outcome. The owner ought to check some evidences like video camera installed in the plaza to affirm the source of litters and vandalism at the plaza. Clearly, the author’s suggestion that forbid skateboarding within plaza will return business to its place is completely weak. In order to decide whether the recommendation stands a chance to give the required result, the policy maker should ask for more evidences and tests that prove number of skateboard users slump the sales of the plaza undoubtedly. The stakeholders also need to query for any proof that affirm the litters and vandalism have affected the number of customers as well as the accusation against the skateboarders as the cause of the litters and vandalism at the plaza.

Analyze an Argument from ScoreItNow! - Late Night News (Specific Evidence)

Hi everyone,

this is my response to the 'Analyze an Argument' topic from ScoreItNow!. I would really appreciate any advice of how to improve my writing, because the system has evaluated my response with the score 3 and I am not really sure why it is so. I know that I struggle with English (since it's my second language) and that the response is anything but exhaustive. But is there anything obviously wrong in this answer?

The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level."

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

Your Answer:

There are several reasons, why the managers' conclusion could be wrong. Even though the conclusion in the memorandum can be ultimately true and there are no other options how to solve the problem, it would be very good to know some important information abou the viewers or current competition.

First of all, the paragraph mentions that the complaints from the past years were concernd mainly about the station's coverage of weather and local news, but it does not provide the neither the number of complaints nor the percentage of complaints with respect to total number of late-news viewers. It is a well-known fact that those, who are not satisfied with an issue of any kind, are always much more active in terms of offering their feedback, than those, who are happy about the contemporary situation. As a result, there might be much more viewers, who prefer national news from weather or local news, but TV station only does not know about them, because these viewers do not offer so much feedback about their satisfaction as their "opponents" offer about their dissatisfaction. The change in program would only worsen the contemporary situation.

But even if the TV station knew about the distribution of their viewers' preferences, the major problem can be hidden somewhere else, concerning with the news quality, for example. Firstly, the quality itself could worsen in the past years, but this would be easily noticeable by the television's managers, and secondly, there might appear another competitor, who offers the same product, such as national news broadcasting at the same time, whose quality of news is much better. Hence, if this information would be available, the late-night program would only have to focus on quality of the national news instead of changing the whole program, which could, in addition, have unexpected or even more negative results in terms of popularity.

In a summary, if the TV station would be able to collect such data as the viewers' preferences, their distribution and the current situation on the market (i.e. if there are appeared any new competition), the TV managers could more likely handle the situation and increase the the channel's popularity again.

Feedback regarding University of San Francisco's MA in Economics program

$

Hello everyone, I was recently accepted to the University of San Francisco's MA in Economics program and I was wondering whether it is a good investment given my aspirations. Essentially, I want to work my way up to a reputable PhD program and ultimately become a tenure-track professor. Given my weak academic credentials in some of my earlier math classes I decided to apply to masters programs and RAships.
How well does the University of San Francisco place students as far as PhD programs? Is it a solid program as far as preparation towards a PhD?
My other plan has been to continue applying for part-time RAships(I have written two undergraduate empirical papers and currently work in a research center). Most of them seem to offer assistance regarding tuition, so I would also look into taking more math or graduate level economics courses as a non degree seeking student.
Which of the two would be a better investment? I would greatly appreciate any feedback! :)
I posted my academic profile below:

PROFILE:
Type of Undergrad:
US Public University:Econ and Math(Top 40, 50), National Ranking(Top 40)
Undergrad GPA:
3.4
Type of Grad:
Grad GPA:
GRE:
153Q and 143 V
Math Courses:
Calc I (B), Calc II (B-), Calc III(C), Intro to proofs(B) Proof based Linear Algebra(W, A), Proof based Advance Calculus I/Real Analysis I (A), Proof base Advance Calculus II/ Real Analysis II(currently taking it this semester, I think I should get an A given what I got for RA I)
Econ Courses (grad-level):
Econ Courses
(undergrad-level): Principles Micro/Macro(A), Intermediate Micro/Macro(B,B+), International Trade(B+), International Macro(A), Public Choice(B+), Honors Empirical Research(B+)
Other Courses:
Statistics I(A), Intro to prob(W, retaking this semester)
Letters of Recommendation:
One from my Real Analysis professor(UC San Diego), my professor who supervised my undergraduate research (University of Chicago) and lastly my employer from the research center that I work in
Research Experience:
I wrote two empirical papers and currently work in an economic research center
Teaching Experience:
Research Interests:
For now, Development and Micro Theory
SOP:
Standard I guess?
Concerns:
My GRE scores are weak(especially verbal) and so are some of my grades. Do adcoms care about verbal if you're American? I'm hoping my A in Advance Calculus compensates for these shortcomings? I really do not know how real analysis signals for MA level econ. From what I've heard Tufts and Duke's Micro/Macro classes tend to be more theoretical/proof based so I'm hoping the A in advance calc and proof based linear signal well?
Other: I'm Familiar with STATA(use it at work and used it for both papers), Excel and Latex. I'm currently teaching myself Python

Late applications considered at UH Manoa

Note, probably posted this in the wrong place the other day...

Prospective Economics Graduate Students:

I’m on the faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and we’d like to let students know that we can still consider some late applications, if you submit them right away. Perhaps we weren’t the only ones seeing fewer applicants this year? Anyway, we think our department is on the rise. If you would like to apply to more schools and you are a highly motivated student with strong credentials, we might be a good fit for your interests.

Our faculty is relatively young. You would receive rigorous, contemporary training in economic theory, macroeconomics and econometrics. Given our relatively small size, we have five primary fields: economics development, international economics, public economics, resource and environmental economics, and human resources. Resource and environmental economics is probably our strongest field, with four well-established scholars, and strong complementary strengths at the University, including Geography and the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. Economic Development is also strong, anchored by our prolific and well-cited recent hire Inessa Love. To complement expertise in the primary fields, we have world-renown faculty doing population economics, plus strong faculty in economic theory, applied microeconomics and econometrics, labor, health, experimental economics and economic history, as well as technically sophisticated junior faculty in macroeconomics.

At least in my experience, this place is also remarkably collegial. Faculty from different fields collaborate well with each other and with graduate students. It’s a vibrant intellectual place. I think our students are happy and tend to place fairly well. We’re currently ranked 90th in the United States on RePEc: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.usecondept.html

If you’re interested, please send your applications AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. You can find application instructions here:

Michigan vs. Maryland vs. PSU

Hi everyone! I have got offers from these institutions.
Michigan: Fellowship $18500 (tuition and fee waiver+health care)
Maryland: Fellowship/Graduate Assistantship (tuition waiver+health care) $20488
PSU: Research Assistantship (tuition waiver+health care, "Usually, there are no assigned duties in the first two years") $ 30330

I am not fanatic about specific area.
Which program should I choose? I care about the value-added of the programs in terms of placement. Could you provide some suggestions? Many thanks!

By the way, I am admitted by UCLA but without any funding. The estimated cost is $51010....too much...so it may not be an option, isn't it?

Columbia vs. NYU

Hi there!

So I have been really lucky to be admitted by both Columbia and NYU, and now I'm not sure how to choose between two good programs that I don't know much about. I'm really interested in Development Economics right now, though I think I want to explore Applied Microeconomics and Industrial Organization in the next few years. I talked to my professor, who commented that Columbia has SIPA which might be great for collaboration, but NYU is very strong in its own right and shouldn't be dismissed.

Funding from both schools are similar for me, though NYU does not require me to TA/RA at all. How serious should I take this in consideration?

I'll go visit both, but I want to start thinking about choosing the right school for myself. Can anyone comment on these two schools in terms of:
- strong faculty in each school
- placement: NYU doesn't have its placement records online I believe
- department culture: how supportive are professors to first year students, how easy it is to start doing research or to work as an RA, is the atmosphere friendly competition or cutthroat, etc (I come from a school with a relatively small grad program and have been taking grad classes here, so I'm curious about how different it might be in a larger program)

I would appreciate any input, thanks in advance! :)

i have been accepted to boston MA econ( unfunded) and BGSE masters unfunded..my interest is macroeconomics but i hv not yet decided upon whether to go for phd or not...i am basically an engineer from India and want to go for phd as of now but dont have any formal economics education and hence dont know whether i would still be going for phd after my masters. boston is very costly.

what are my chances for top 10 phd program from both the places, also if i want to go for job which place would be better??

thanks..

What can you guys say about UC Irvine (UCI)?

$

Depending on the source, UCI consistently ranks in the 35-50 range. Which makes it a fine program, especially if you consider geographic location and proximity to major cities (LA and SD are each about an hour away in the opposite directions). Specifically, UCI seems to be a great program for those interested in Applied Microeconomics with an emphasis on labor, urban, transportation, and public policy. It is also has concentrations in Public Choice and Transportation Economics.

Some of their more distinguished faculty members are David Neumark (labor), Jan Brueckner (urban, public), Eric Swanson (macroeconomics), and John Duffy (behavioral).

Anybody have any other opinions (past, present, or future) on the program at UCI?

Thanks!

PSU vs. BU vs. Davis

Hi!

I have got offers from PSU(24K), BU(20K), and UC Davis(funding TBD).
Since I have interests in both micro theory and applied micro, I prefer a school providing good opportunities in both fields. I can see that PSU is quite strong in micro theory, but not in applied micro. In contrast, the applied micro faculty in BU seems strong and fits my interest, but they do not seem to have many people in micro theory. And, honestly, I do not know much about UC Davis. The overall ranking and placement records seem to be similar in PSU and BU, while UC Davis seems to be a bit behind both of them. I would like to know which school would be the best choice for me.

And does anyone know the attrition rates for those schools? Also, I have heard (from a former PSU faculty) that PSU maintains a good faculty-student relationship. Is it true? What about in other schools? Basically any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks all!

Looking for feedback on GRE test prep material

Hello Students!

I am looking for some feedback on GRE test preparation material and would like to know what classes or books you find the most useful.

A little bit of context here: last year my friend and I started to think what's the best and most efficient way to prepare for the test, and the idea we come up with is to collect real GRE test questions from GRE test takers and compile the questions into a book. After completion of our book, we run ads on Google search and Facebook; however, out of the thousands of visits and clicks, very few people actually purchased our material. We've compared the quality and quantity our material and price to the popular books on Amazon including Kaplan GRE Premier, Cracking the GRE, 5lb Book of GRE Pratice Problems, etc, and it's apparent our material is either superior or at least as good (depending on each student's strength and weakness)

I'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts on why this approach doesn't work and it would be awesome if you can share what prep material you are having great success with.

Cheers!
Amy

Are Online Courses an option to boost a Profile?

I would like to take some economics courses to boost my application (in case I decide to reapply). I currently have a research position which will help me with experience in that area, but I still would like to make a better impression about my performance in economics (I studied Business Math) because my grades in economics are not too good.

Are online courses (do not have to be free) an option to improve a profile?

I appreciate all your suggestions.

Brown vs BU vs Maryland

I have got offers from these three schools with full funding and my research interests are Development Economics and Macroeconomics.

I searched the placement and found that Maryland may have the best among these three department. However, since Maryland targets a smaller class size this year and some great people left the department these years, I am worried about the future of the department.

Hope you guys can give me some thoughts.Thank you very much!

Questions to professors (visit days, email)

$

What questions do you / did you / will you / would you ask professors during visit days?
Several professors are sending emails offering to answer any questions. Would to ask them?

I feel like questions about the program itself are kind of strange; it says on the website what kind of courses are offered, what the requirements are,... If I want more details on placements, attrition rates,... I would rather email the secretary (or similar) than waste a professors time (who likely doesn't have that detailed information anyway). Asking questions about their research via email seems strange to me - (a) we are not working together right now / in the near future on research, and (b) that's something I would find easier to talk about during visit days anyway.

So the last (research interests of them and me) at least gives me something for visit days.

Many other questions (about grad life, how approachable professors are, how often advisers are meeting with their students,...) I find more appropriate and easier to ask to current graduate students. Or should I ask a professor something like "How often are you meeting with the students you advise?" ?

So, what kind of questions do you ask? (visit days and email)
