If funding substantially different, Is is appropriate to negotiate

I have three offers Penn State(31,500), Uni of Maryland(21,000) and Boston University(21,000). I am inclined towards BU but i am concerned with Boston being expensive and financial offer from Penn State is substantially higher(given State college is so cheap). Should i even consider money while making the decision? Can i bargain for more funding from Boston U? Would it be appropriate thing to do?

Value of Attending a Program Outside of T15

Hello all,

I have noticed a lot of people here have been anxiously awaiting offers from and will be attending, schools outside of the T15 (obviously this is a flexible group of schools, but some schools fall clearly outside of the range). For people in this category, what are your career goals? What do you hope to get from the experience? What do you think the value added is? I've always been under the impression that an Econ PhD is dominated by other options if you're not going into academia but it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of opportunity to enter academia if you're not in the T15 (or realistically even the T10 or T5) of programs. I just want to know if there is an angle I'm missing :).

Visit Day/Open House Experience 2016

Hi everyone,

Given that visit days at some schools have already happened, I thought it'd be nice to have a separate thread that gathers people's experience at visit days/open houses, impression of programs and advice on what questions to ask. It should facilitate exchange of information among current admitted students, and would be a great source of information for future applicants. I'm thinking of a format like this (suggestions welcome!):

Meeting with professors on visit day

Hi all. My visit days are coming up and at both of my upcoming visit days I have the chance to talk with one or two professors. I of course picked professors I thought I may want to work with but I am a little unsure of what I should expect from the meetings. Is it mostly to talk about the department, their research, or maybe my potential research interests? Perhaps I'm just a little nervous not sure if I should prepare a bit by reading some of their work closely or if it is more relaxed than that. Any guidance from those who have attended these meetings would be much appreciated!

Question:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology has made the world a better place to live. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Essay:

In the modern world, technology has made the world a better place to live. Compared to the old time, technology has now been fully applied to our live. I strongly agree with the provided statement and will discuss the reasons in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, technology has made long distance communication better. For instance, I am now living thousands kilometers away from home and I am able to talk to my parents every day. Instead of sending mail, people are now able to exchange information via phone call within seconds. Not only that, the newly introduced video call allows face-to-face communication on the electronic devices.

Secondly, the transportation is now convenient to everyone. In the old centuries, people were only capable to travel limited distance every trip. In contrast, automobile nowadays allows us to travel in the world on daily basis. Besides that, well-developed public transportation has greatly improved our life quality by providing cheap yet worry-free travel option in town.

Thirdly, human being is now being more and more efficient as the technology evolves. Take, for example, automated factory. An automated factory allows mass production with minimal human workforce. Subsequently, the injury encountered at work can be minimized while ensuring the production target met.

To put it briefly, technology is undeniably transformed the world into a more livable environment for us.

Topic: All too often, companies hire outside consultants to suggest ways for the company to operate more efficiently. If companies were to spend more time listening to their own employees, such consultants would be unnecessary

Essay:
Consultants can be an enourmous resources for companies seeking to operate more efficiently. There is often a power inbalance between those in positions of power in companies and employees. Consultants are less affected by the power dynamics within a company. As outsiders, they can provided opinons without the threat of reprocusion. Althought consultants' businesses often rely on reocurring customers, by offering good recommendations they will be able to continue working even if those recommendations are met with resistance initally. Furthermore, another benefit of consultants is their outside perspectives. As company outsiders, consultants' understanding of challenges will be less bias than current employees. Although, company staff may have more contextual information, consultants can work in collaboration with current staff to combine their objective perspective with company context. Finally, consultants can bring in specialized expertise that current staff lack. For example, a manufacturing company may not have the expertise to evaluate if a new product will be marketable. This comany may chose to consult with market researchers. This will allow the company to continue focusing on their strenght - manufacuting in this example - while benefiting from the extertise of an outside consultant. The alternative would be to hire a marketing expert; however, this may be challenging since they may not know what they should be looking for during the hiring process. Another alternative, would be to investigate their current staffs' opinons on how marketable the product is; however, their opinons will lack the experience needed. In summary, consultants have the freedom to offer opinions without threat, they are more objective, and have the experise necessary to handle a specialized situation.

Topic: Many lives might be saved if inoculations against cow flu were routinely administered to all people in areas where the disease is detected. However, since there is a small possibility that a person will die as a result of the inoculations, we cannot permit inoculations against cow flue to be routinely administered.

Essay:
To evaluate the argument, one must know (1) the number of lives that could be potentially saved from the adminstration of cow flu vacines in diesease detected areas, (2) the number of people who will die from inoculations, as well as (3) the cost and ease of implementing such a policy. Understanding these three things will allow us to properly assess whether the benefits out weight the cost. For example, if the number of lives saved is less than the number of people who will ultimately die from cow flu inoculations, then this policy is not benefitical. However, if the number of lives that will be saved is extremely greater than the number of people who will die from inoculations, then the policy should be investigated further. Next, one must understand how easily this policy will be implemented. It may be that citizens will be uninterested in inoculations, and may become resistant. If this is the case, then forcing individuals to take incoulations may not be worthwhile. Additionally, if the cost of implementation is very great, then there may be better uses for those funds. For instance, it may be that another disease can be more readily tackled with the same funds. In summary, the number of potential lives saved must be compared with the number of potential deaths, then the ease of implementation of the policy must be explored to understand the ultimate benefits.

OSU vs MSU

Does OSU strictly dominate MSU if we keep the location considerations aside? As far as the department fit is concerned, I like both. I was looking at the placement record for both schools and turns out OSU did not have a single academic placement in US last year and just one to California State University a year before that. While MSU placed at University of California- Riverside, University of Connecticut, Oregon State and University of North Carolina in years 2014 and 2015. Any comments?

I have offers from Rochester, Johns Hopkins, and WUSTL. I have interests in international, macro, and micro theory. The offers differ a bit: Rochester (2 years fellowship, 3 years TA; $18k); WUSTL (1 year fellowship, 4 years TA, $22k); and Johns Hopkins (1 year fellowship, 4 years TA, $28.5k).

I would like to have an academic job after finishing. Any thoughts about which offer to take?

Hi guys,

Does anyone have experience with the 10-month MA program at UT Austin? Is it a good stepping stone for PhD programs in econ and/or public policy?

Thanks!

MAPSS Chicago

Can anyone give any information on the new 1-year MA program at Chicago? It seems to be a bit more rigorous than the typical US Master's: you are able to take 2/3 of the first year PhD sequences with the PhD students, you get to take field courses in the Winter and Spring quarter, and you get to work on a MA thesis with anyone in the department (barring you make certain grades in the Fall and the professor agrees to oversee your work). It's also relatively cheap for a Master's since the first cohort will pay half tuition (25-27k). My questions are:

1. What are the chances of getting a UC professor (either from the economics department or Booth) to get on board with your MA thesis? I've heard most Chicago Ph.D. students are left to fend for themselves; I can't imagine it being any better for MA students.

2. Does anyone know (preferably the insiders here) how this new program is being regarded by current UC faculty? Admittedly, this is related to my first question.

3. If you have a funded offer in hand from a T30 institution, would you do the MA? In other words, does anyone here think the program at Chicago can push a student from a T30 candidate to a T10-20 one?

I know these questions may not be easy to answer due to the total uncertainty of the program (next years cohort would be its first ever), but any information possible would be helpful in finding out whether this MA is worth pursuing.

MA before PhD; USC vs. UT Austin vs. Vanderbilt vs. UCSC

Hello folks.

I've been following Urch for a while, but this is my first post. Please allow me to introduce myself a bit. I'm an international applicant, I got a Bachelor in Corporate Finance (outside the U.S.) in 2007 and a masters in Finance (in the U.S) in 2012. After 8 year working experience, I want to change my career path to academic instead of industry. My academic goal is to pursue a PhD in Econ or Finance. Because I'm out of the academic field for quite a long time, I'm supposed to get a Master in Econ before doing a PhD.

Recently, I've just got accepted into several Masters' programs including UT-Austin (M.A. Econ with $), Vanderbilt (GPED or Master in Econ Development, no info about funding), UC Santa Cruz (M.S.in Applied Econ and Finance, with fellowship $), and I'm still waiting for USC (M.A. Econ).

May I ask for your opinion which program is suitable for me, who have a background in Finance (Assume I got accepted to USC). I'm open to both PhD in Econ and PhD in Finance, though I understand getting an admission into a good PhD Finance program is extremely difficult. My research interest would be Macro, Micro, Econometrics and Corporate Finance.

Thank you in advance.

Tufts MS or Duke MA program?

Hi:) I have received master admission from Tufts and Duke.
Tufts: full tuition scholarship+grader
Duke: 25% tuition waiver

I want to go to a public policy Ph.D program(Harvard, Chicago, Umich, UCB, Duke). Which program is better preparation for Ph.D? The placement of master students at Duke seems better than that of Tufts. But tuition at Duke is still very expensive. Which one should I choose? Thank you!

My profile: What am I competitive for, and what is likely? Ph.D. Finance

$

0
So here's my anticipated profile at the time I apply this December:

-4.0 GPA in finance and mathematics from a well known, but non elite school.
-calc 2 completed, and all upper level finance courses completed including: international finance, fixed income analyses, commercial real estate finance, equity investment analyses, business statistics 1 and 2. And some other courses as well.
- in progress at application: calc 3 (h), differential equations (h), real analyses, linear algebra (h), abstract algebra; h meaning taken as an honors course.
-1 semester (in progress) research assistanship with finance professor
-2 strong, and 1 medium letter of recomendation
-2 8-month finance internships in commercial real estate finance and corporate finance
-CFA level 1 candidate (don't know if this will be relevant, but figured I'd put it down)
-167 quant, 166 verbal, and 5 AWA on GRE
-2 semesters of tutoring finance, 1 semester leading a calc 1 supplemental instruction class
-been working as a broker for a year and a half after getting my finance degree. Has helped tremendously in soft skills, among other things, but for a variety of reasons I want to be a professor.

so, what schools do I have a good shot at for a Ph.D. In finance? Or possibly, do I have a good shot at getting into a good financial engineering masters program that could get me into a Ph.D. In finance afterward? Or, should I wait to apply to either until after I have finished my math degree.

Essays, essays and essays again...

Hey!

I have decided to take my GRE and it's due to 8th of April. therefore, I have a bit less than 3 weeks to prepare.
I have problems with the Verbal part of the exam, but what I really want to ace (get at least 5.0) is the AWA section. For further notice, I am not a native English speaker and English is more like the 3rd language for me, thus i am no prof. Now I have some questions that I want to ask and get some answers to.

Firstly, whats with the essay prompts? I mean seriously, does ETS wants to see us burn? I was trying to chose a random essay topic from the pool earlier and this is what I got -
Quote:

Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers. Write a response....
At first I thought that it is a relatively nice topic and I could write a few paragraphs on it. But when I started to write, it hit me. I have no clue what kind of educational institutions they are talking about - pre-schools, middle schools, universities? I mean seriously, it can be anything. In these cases, should I just assume that they are talking about high school? Is it safe to do that? Or throughout the essay the main subject of the essay has to be "Educational Institution"?

Ok, another one

Quote:

Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than unquestioningly carry out the will of the people they serve.
This is quite straight forward - what if the government is not elected? There still are some countries in the world today that are under totalitarianism regime. Should I elaborate in my essay that there are different types of governments? I believe that this would take the essay of the course and score me some minus points.

Also, about the sentence structure. I have been doing research on this, but I can't find a unified answer. Should I use long and complex sentences or rather keep it short and to the point?

Moreover, how do you express your opinion without using I form. Say I want to give my opinion about leaves on the tree, direct way would be - "In my opinion the leaves are green", then what is the indirect way? - "The leaves are green" is not really an expression of an opinion. huh, I can but wonder.

And lastly, which English should I use in my essay - British English (BE) or American English(AE? I assume that since the test is offered by an American company, it should be conducted in AE, but BE is so much more familiar to me.

Thanks!

Any input will be appreciated!

Kind regards,
Bfit
