How's it going? I've been lurking around for a while and decided to throw my profile out there and see what you think my chances of being accepted into a PhD program in 2014 are.
Age :31
UnderGrad: The original grade is 90/100, I guess it is about 3.83 (with Honors and Dean's List in final year) from a university based upon the Open University of the UK system.
Degree: B.A. in Management and Economics.

GRE:
Q 157/ V 152, AW 3.5. Very low I know, I haven't got much time to do it again because of work.
Toefl: 100 overall, Reading 26, Listen 23, Speak 23, Writing 28

letter of recommendation: 3 from professors for whom I wrote the seminars for in my MBA and B.A. - 1 is an ex-IMF and world bank advisor, others publish well (books and etc). They told me they would make an effort for me and write a good letter of recommendation.

Research (relevant): None, besides the seminars for B.A and MBA where I got 95-100 out of 100. Work related analysis...
Teaching: None (Besides high school tutoring a little bit), also have been a teacher's aid in high school classes..long time ago.

Work experience: During the years I have been a student I mainly worked full time jobs in an insurance consultancy company, also as an analyst in the web industry. Also I have been a private importer/enterpreneur on a small scale. So about 4-7 years of work experience all in all So this is also why my GRE sucks.

I am interested mainly in marketing because I have dealt a lot with customers and I am eager to know how they make their decisions, how their minds work, I am interested in consumer behavior (not mandatory) and also in the marketing aspect of pensions. More personally I am interested also in decision making of the consumers about their pension programs, and in behaviour/decisions regarding personal finance issues, I really want to research personal finance issues as it is a big part of my work anyway and I believe I have gained some insights on the subject of personal finance.

Alternative interest might be in Strategy/Global Business ,Web Industry Business . Maybe RIsk Insurance (but I probably won't get accepted).

So far I saw University of Florida might fit as they want 320 GRE (while I have 309), also maybe MacMaster who want 600 GMAT-maybe my GRE is around the same, also maybe U of Ontario with 75% GRE-I have around 68 percentile, but still-maybe I should give it a try?
Oh,and Finally Minnesota with 315 gre minimum

Where else do you think I can apply? I tried to check Rutgers/Rochester but had hard time finding their "minimum GRE cutoffs". SHould I try there? MAybe also Virgina-Darden?

Where do you think I have a chance with 157 GRE quant? Do you think I have anything in my profile that can overcome the bad GRE?Do you think I have any chance in the top 40? Top 50? Top 60? Top 70? I kinda gave up on top-30....or should I try there as well?

Thank you and good luck to you all.

Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and to disobey and resist unjust laws.

Write response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

A cursory glance at the given statement leaves an appealing impression. There is no iota of doubt that just laws should be followed and the unjust ones need to be resisted. But the real problem arises when we wish to answer questions like : who will decide whether the law is just or unjust; what if the law is felt by some people as just and others perceive it as unjust; what if the resistance turns out to be too violent and leads to loss of many innocent lives ? I agree to the fact that extreme laws which ostracizes a section or tries to prove supremacy of one group over another needs to be resisted. But, at the same time, some laws are those which lie in the grey should be left at the discretion of government.

First, resisting unjust laws is required for the change in society. Various civil wars are example of it. Civil war in America or Africa; French revolution; Protest against caste system in India and many such examples show that, for a better change resisting against unfair laws and practices is required. In all these examples a certain section of society was being oppressed by those who are influential or those who are in power. All these conflicts have made the laws more just and have brought harmony and equality in the society.

While the above argument seems to be very convincing, there are cases where the resistance has given nothing but loss of life and property. Terrorism across the globe is an example of it. For example, there are some, who think that the laws in Kashmir, India are not just. Those perverted people start killing the innocent citizens of India to pressurize the government. This type of resistance has not only made the place virtually inhabitable but also, has resulted in decreased tourism there. And, hence such a resistance is definitely, condemnable.

To sum up, I think that protesting against an unfair law is definitely not a bad thing to do, but it should always remain non-violent. Other people would also start to feel about it, if it is actually unjust. After all, all human beings want to live in a harmonious and just society.

GRE's over: Quant-168 and Verbal-156

Hi folks,
Just gave GRE..it was kind of a nightmare. I fumbled on the verbal part. I had read somewhere(most probably by Magoosh), that if in a verbal section there is no large paragraph, it is for sure a fake section and under that impression my concentration level involuntarily dropped and it got difficult to comprehend.

For verbal : get a strategy about what part to attempt first, for me it was the large RC. For such prioritizing you must do Mock tests. Even if you give three different mock test from the same source you'll be able to decide what part to attempt first.

For quant: Its not as easy as one thinks. Getting a 170 is very possible if you don't make silly mistakes, as I did. Again mock tests, I'll suggest that during mock tests at your home you can reduce the time limits and purposely get into a rush. For example a quant practice at 25 minutes per 20 questions will more efficiently elicit your weaknesses rather than a 35 minutes per 20 questions.

All the best!

Cheers!

For all the scathing accuracy with which she criticizes the lives of social aspirants and moneyed folk, the writer appears to (i)_______ being part of the world she makes seem so (ii)________.

Blank (i) Blank (ii)
A savor D insufferable
B abhor E intoxicating
C distain F glamorous

For the second blank, it's not hard to find "insufferable" in accordance with "criticizes", but why the word "seem" can constitute a contrast between first and second blank so that it should be "savor"?

Thanks for your help!

Profile evaluation for PhD in Marketing

Hi,

Request your inputs on my profile as below, for a PhD Marketing program fitment.

To lay first on the table, developing an interest through this funnel has been over time, e.g, I am an MBA and I was not sure of pursuing a long term career in business before I had even started on the program, gradually over time, I realized my interest in Marketing, so my major, and finally again, through couple of more years, my interest in pursuing a career in academia. So while I was not at the end of the funnel right from the start, it has evolved. And so I hope would my research topics and acquired knowledge. Also, just to add on a different note, my grades through high school have all been in top 1-3% of class.

Research Interest - Marketing - Customer Experience Design & Design Thinking in Early Phase to Medium Scale Enterprises. (As mentioned above, I am not sure if this is a topic or area or field)

Undergrad - B.S (Computer Science Engineering) - not top 10 or 20 but a decent university in India (JNT University Hyderabad)
GPA - not sure, it is on a percentile scale. I secured 66% for a First Class (while 70% is for a Distinction as per university GPA)

Postgrad - MBA - Marketing major from AIM, Manila, Philippines (AACSB accredited and one of the best in Asia).
GPA - 3.6 on a 5 scale (which is equivalent to 86% - a 3 GPA being 80%. Class topper secured 4.1). Marketing GPA 4 (top 1% of class). However, one concern is that I have one subject in my term-1 with a fail grade which had damaged my overall term-1 grades, but that was for reasons outside academics, while I notched up to compensate this damage in all my subsequent grades pretty well.

Research Experience - With regard to real academic research, none. (never got a chance). However, we had a MBA thesis called MRR (Management Research Report) not mere a project submission (had to defend through 7 hours with 10 months of rigorous homework). Secured grade top 1% of class and thesis converted into a case.

Work Experience - 5 years with Oracle and 3 years in early phase startups (Marketing & BD). Not sure of my pre-MBA workex, but my post-MBA time around marketing roles in startups has also gone a long way in digging out gaps in industry and the need to know more in my chosen area of interest, to help teach future leaders better. To add, I have been a products guy all my life. Building & managing concepts & products.

Other Experiences - Not sure if these will be counted in the profile evaluation by universities, but I have a very strong & impactful community experience.

GRE - 326 (Q-168, V-158)

TOEFL - 112

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION - Can get both LORs from profs who have done pretty good research work in the global community.

I am keen on pursuing a career in business academia specializing in Marketing. Kindly suggest what would be low-hanging for me (top 20, 50, 100) or possible far fetched. Also, some insights on how big a damage my term-1 fail grade in one subject will be. (All other grades in all terms and also beyond my MBA have been within top quartile).

Thanks!

True or false: Some equilateral triangles are not similar

I think the answer is false because a equilateral triangle has 60*-60*-60* angles, and equal lengths on all sides. The sides, and the perimeters of different equilateral triangles will have the same scale factor. I'm not sure. Any input?

Hi guys,

I am planning to apply for PhD in Finance next year.

Academic background:

Holds computer science engineering degree (India).
Currently pursuing MBA in Finance (Canada).

I just started MBA program. I am really intered in Finance doctrol program because of I want to pursue academic/research career.
So I am going to take few research courses in 2nd year.
I am also going to take 2 math courses. I have done many high level math courses in computer science. But not sure if those courses would be any help.

My last GMAT score was 650. So I am going to retake to score 700+. I have 4 years of programming experience in software industry.

I am not aiming top programs so please don't judge my profile for that. I am aiming for any good doctrol program.

I need suggestion that how can I improve my application?
If you think I can't get admission then please don't comment because I need to know some positive suggestion. I can't go back and change the past so whatever qualification I have I want to make best of it.

We have few Finance professor who are from top universities so I can manage some good refrenece letters.

Picking between 2 professors for a letter of recommendation

I have 2 LoRs (both from economic professors. I did research with one and did well in class in another) but I am torn between who I should ask for the third one.

1) Professor that I did TA with (helped develop syllabus). I took a class with her but got B. I am pretty close to her and she agreed to write a recommendation for me.
2) Professor in the independent research class. Not very close to him. I sent him an email but he has not responded back.

The second professor has not responded back to my email for a month. Do you think I should email him again and try to get a recommendation from him or just get a recommendation from the first professor?

I really appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Importance of A in Real Analysis

$

I'm a junior at a USNews T40 American college. I have a near perfect GPA in the economics department, as well as a summer research project and TA experience. But, my math grades have left something to be desired: B+ in calc III, A in linear algebra, B in intro to proofs (ouch), A in differential equations, A in abstract algebra. It seems like to get into a T20 university you need A's in most math classes, so I don't have much room for subpar grades. I'm taking real analysis and probability theory this semester - probability looks like A or A-, but I ****ed up a real analysis midterm to the point that I probably can't get a better grade than a B in the course.

Have I completely shut myself out of the Top 20? What about Top 30, or Top 50? I still have next semester to take more math classes before applying next fall, but it seems like real analysis is one of the most important courses you can take to signal your intelligence.

Thanks for any advice, I just want to have a realistic understanding of what schools I can shoot for.

Profile Evaluation- PhD Finance- Fall 2015

Hi Guys,

Below is the summary of my profile for PhD in Finance:

Undergrad: Bachelor of Engineering (Top 10 Engineering School in India): GPA- 3.73
Masters (Engineering Management with concentration in Finance): Duke University: GPA- 3.75

GRE: Quant Score- 800 (Total 1350)

Aprroximately 3 years of work ex in India as a Software Developer in Banking Industry.

Currently working as a Quantitative Risk Analyst in Market Risk Management group in a leading US Bank for past 14 months.

Have interned at Duke for a pharmaceutical firm as operations analyst(worked on supply chain model)

The only issue with my profile is I have not published anything. Additionally, recommendation letters are OK(1 from my undergrad professor, 1 from Duke professor and 1 from my project manager at US Bank).

What should be my ideal portfolio of US schools for PhD? I particularly have interest in risk management (credit risk modeling), asset pricing and market microstructure.

"in person" You're using it wrong

Trying the Huffington Post approach to thread titles here. Please forgive me if you were unfairly baited.

For a while I have been noticing that people are using the phrase "in person" in a way that doesn't feel quite right to me. For example, I heard such utterances as:

  1. *The Tesla sure looks cool, but I'd have to see it in person to render my final verdict.
  2. *I don't think it's a good idea to buy jewelry online; it's the kind of thing you'd really need to see in person before you buy it.

For me, those sound incorrect. For me, these usages are better:
  1. If you think the baby is cute in the video, wait till you see him in person.
  2. This is the sort of thing I'd prefer to discuss in person, not on the phone.

What's the difference? You can probably figure it out--the 'person' is the human, not the object. So if you see someone in person, that means you see him live, in the flesh. And to me, it doesn't make sense to say that you're going to see a thing in person, because to me, it sounds like the thing is alive.

Yeah, of course the next question will be how to express the same idea without using 'in person'? Well, what's wrong with just 'see'? As in 'I'd have to see the Tesla to be sure.' And in some cases, I suppose we could say 'I'd have to see the Tesla up close to be sure.'

Yes, I know that language changes, evolves, etc. and that words and phrases take on new meanings over time.

Anyone else agree as strongly as I do? Or disagree?

Greetings! I frequent several threads throughout these forums, but have almost always noticed one bold similarity when it comes to profiles...they seem to represent the highest of scorers/profiles. That being said, I would love some advice on my current profile. More specifically, I would love to receive suggestions for master's programs that anyone may think I am worthy of admission to. I realize I can and should retake the GRE, but I would love advice on my profile AS IS. I figured this may be significant to others, as I have not scored well on the GRE for several reasons. In advance, thank you for any forthcoming responses.

Hi All,
I am starting NAPLEX exam preparation and looking for study partner/s. I am not necessarily looking for a big group. From my FPGEE preparation experience I know that even one or two study partners with the same goal and time line was extremely helpful in focusing on the right material and discussion. I am planning to write the exam late November or early December.
I am located in Philadelphia region and will prefer to be in touch through skype or any other net source.

I have been using this site at least 3 hours a week. I am taking the GRE Nov. 15-cutting it close since my application packages are due Dec. 1. I have been writing 2 essays a day (1 issue & 1 analyze) for 3 weeks. It took me a couple of months to conquer my fear of writing these essays. It sounds like I am not alone, which is reassuring. I am studying by myself, so it would be great to receive feedback. I am happy to exchange essays and feedback, in fact, I look forward to it.
